Will I get wet?
Not really the SB3 is a keelboat so no capsizing occurs, at worst waves splashing over the bow.
How many people fit on an SB3?
Normally Laser SB3's are sailed by 3-4 people, since the SB3 class rules for official class competitions state a maximum weight of 270kg. For leisure sailing and training this limit doesn't apply.
Is there a toilet on the boat?
No there’s no toilet onboard, however our training is structured so that we make suitably frequent trips ashore.
Will I need to wear gloves?
Not necessarily, if your hands are tough from other activities then you should be ok, however as a precaution it’s a good idea to have some if possible.
Will the boat capsize?
No the boat has a keel with 350kg of lead at the bottom, the worst that can happen is the boat leans over onto its side briefly.
Do I need my own waterproofs?
No we can provide you with waterproofs but if you have your own feel free to use them.
Will I have to wear a buoyancy aid or life jacket?
Yes we ask all students to wear either a 50N buoyancy aid or 150N lifejacket, which we can provide you with.
How long does a session on the water last?
The sessions can be from ½ a day up to a full day and evening in the summer.
Do the boats have an engine?
Yes, it is class rules for Laser SB3’s to carry an outboard engine, that is stowed in the hatch below decks.
What happens if there is no wind or too much wind?
The training is flexible with Pelican Racing, if conditions are to light or too strong to achieve anything on the water there is always shorebased theory to go through. We can easily move the remainder of your training to another day without extra charge.
How do I get to you from the mainland?
The easiest way is get the train/bus/car to Southampton then get the Red Funnel High Speed service across to Cowes where our offices are based 3mins walk along the High St.
By Train: Travel to Southampton Central station where there is a free bus that stops at the Redjet terminal and will take you into Cowes.
If travelling by car you can park at the Redfunnel car park and take the Redjet to Cowes.
Alternatively come across on the car ferry that takes you into East Cowes where you will need to cross the river to West Cowes. Full travel details can be found by clicking on …………………….
Do I need accommodation or is it provided?
We don’t have any on-site accommodation at Pelican Racing but we work closely with landlords to provide appropriate accommodation for all our guests.
Do you provide lunch during the day?
We can provide food and drinks during the day for a small additional fee, as standard we suggest individuals source their own but we’re more than happy to provide.
Are logbooks/course materials included in the prices?
Yes we provide all logbooks and course materials for all our RYA training courses.
What qualifications do I need to charter a Laser SB3?
Minimum qualifications are Day Skipper coastal certificate or keelboat Seamanship skills. For experienced sailors without formal qualifications our team can assess competency in house.
What ID do you require for chartering boats?
Our insurance asks that we take either driving license or passport number in addition to the standard Name, Address etc.
What are the costs if I damage a boat during a charter?
Our insurance has an excess of £500, if any damage is sustained as part of a charter and charterer is found to be liable then they are responsible for up to £500. For racing this excess is increased up to £1000.
Do you take a security deposit for a boat charter?
Yes we ask for a completely refundable security deposit for the boat to the total of £500. Normally this never actually leaves the account it is simply pre-authorised on a credit/debit card.
Are your boats always based in Cowes?
No, the majority of the fleet live in Cowes Yacht Haven, however we regularly move boats around to other locations such as Hamble and Lymington etc to allow people better access to sailing our Laser SB3’s.
Can Pelican Racing organize and run large events with the whole fleet?
Yes we can, our fleet are available for charter all year round be it smaller match style events or full one design fleet events, your imagination is the only limit!!
