Pelican Racing was formed out of a desire to get people into sailing on great boats with out having to buy and look after their own. Our primary investor, Ian Gilmour (Managing Director Pelican Consulting) was in that very position and made the choice to buy a boat, as he saw no other way of getting into the sport. So at the Southampton boat show he purchased a Laser SB3.
After approaching a local sailing school he was put in touch with Ash Holmes (Co-director Pelican Racing) and between them put a full learn to sail and race campaign for 2008.
Phil Devereux (Co-director Pelican Racing) was brought in to help strengthen the team ahead of Cork Week 2008 which was the teams first major competition after claiming 2nd in class in the Round the Island Race earlier that year.
The team continued to race all year finishing with the 150 boat World Championships in Dublin.
By this point we all knew full well the strength and versatility of the SB3 and wanted to give more people the opportunity to get into sailing using these fantastic boats as a platform without all the inherent pressures of boat ownership.
After many discussions and lots of planning Pelican Racing was officially launched on the 19th April 2009 with 6 Laser SB3’s plus the original race boat and a Rib.
Following a successful launch we invested in a further 6 boats to take our fleet up to 13 SB3’s and 1 Rib.
